A global movement for menstrual equity!
Menstrual Health Day (May 28) unites the world in the fight to end period poverty, reduce stigma, and ensure dignified periods for all. The Period Purse marks the day by lighting landmarks in red, raising flags, engaging governments, and amplifying menstrual equity through a national public awareness campaign.
Each year, cities across the country support menstrual equity by marking Menstrual Health Day!
Cities nationwide illuminate landmarks in red to draw attention to menstrual health and increase public awareness of menstrual equity year-round.
Civic and corporate spaces turn into visible champions for menstrual equity by flying a period flag that helps signal public support for menstrual health and equity.
Local governments demonstrate their support by signing a Period Proclamation, formally recognizing menstrual equity as a public priority.
Started by the non-profit WASH United in 2014, Menstrual Hygiene Day is a global day of advocacy that brings together more than 910 partner organizations working to raise awareness about menstrual health and period poverty around the world. The date (May 28) represents the average duration of a menstrual cycle (28 days) and the average number of days of bleeding (five days – May being the fifth month in the western calendar).
At The Period Purse, we mark Menstrual Health Day (instead of Menstrual Hygiene Day) –– this name better reflects our important work in period education, in pushing for period equity, and in advocating for lasting policy change.
You and your community can join the movement on May 28 –– and every day! Say the word PERIOD. Create a period-friendly space. Become a Bloody Legend and support menstruators in your community.
